  19. AT&F1 factory defaults will suffice for 99.999% of all PC-based
  20. (DOS/WINDOWS) applications.

  22. You will likely encounter some absurd recommendation for
  23. a 42-character init string being bantered around for the past
  24. several years in the various USR user group nets.  However, 80% of that
  25. 42-character string is FACTORY DEFAULT VALUES anyway and what isn't will
  26. not help your file transfer speeds except in the one special instance
  27. where you are transferring precompressed data like .ZIP files, and only
  28. then between dissimilar modems.  Between two USR V.Everythings, the
  29. famous "Jeff Marchi 42-character init string" will sometimes actually
  30. impede throughput and will never help it.  Two or more years ago that
  31. long init string had some merit. Today, with the new V.Everythings it
  32. is superfluous.

  34. What you might want to do is speed up your autodialer with the S11
  35. register, setting it to 50 instead of the default value of 70, but that
  36. would be the lone recommendation aside from &F1 defaults.
